Scarlet fever

Incubation period: 1-3 days, but can be up to 5 days in rare cases. It is passed on through close contact.

First signs: Scarlet fever is a bacterial throat infection which also produces a rash. First signs are similar to an attack of tonsillitis. There may be fever, loss of appetite, vomiting and stomach-ache.

Definite signs: On day 2 or 3 tiny red dots appear on the skin which has an overall red flush.  

What the doctor may do: Give antibiotics to control the bacteria and prevent complications.

What to do: Keep your child away from school and get him / her to the doctor for a check-up.

Scarlet fever is not dangerous, so long as it is treated promptly.
